Leonard S. Englander

Founding Partner

Leonard S. Englander is a founding partner of Englander Fischer, handling real estate and corporate matters for over 48 years while specializing in business trials. Lenny has been Board Certified in Business Litigation by the Florida Bar since 1997, a distinction held by fewer than 225 attorneys statewide and is one of only 81 attorneys in Florida that have remained continuously Board Certified for over 25 years. He served a six-year term as a member of the Bar’s Business Litigation Certification Committee and its statewide Chairman for two years. Lenny has been annually honored by the Wall Street Journal as a “super lawyer” and has been the recipient of many peer-rated awards in the area of business litigation. He handles a broad range of complex commercial litigation matters and has acted as trusted counsel, guiding public and private corporations through state and federal civil court and arbitration proceedings.

Lenny’s counsel is often sought in both the company’s decisions and legal matters. He is a member of the Florida Bar and admitted to practice before all Florida courts, the United States Tax Court, the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida, and the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals. He prides himself on aggressive, level-headed advocacy tempered by professionalism and a common sense approach to business and economic realities. Lenny and his wife Betsy reside in St. Petersburg, where they have served on a variety of charitable organizations, including the All Children’s Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees, the Free Clinic, Remember Honor and Support, Temple Beth-Menorah Manor, and the Florida Holocaust Museum, to name a few.

Courtney L. Fernald

Co-Managing Partner

Courtney Fernald is the co-managing partner of Englander Fischer. She is Board Certified in Appellate Practice by the Florida Bar and also routinely handles complex commercial litigation. Courtney has been named a “super lawyer” in appellate practice every year since 2021 and, prior to that, was named a “rising star” beginning in 2012. She is a past chair of the St. Petersburg Bar Association Appellate Practice Section and formerly served on its Executive Board.

Beatriz S. McConnell

Co-Managing Partner

Beatriz S. McConnell is a strategic business litigator who has been practicing in the Tampa Bay area since 2007. With an established track record of successful jury and non-jury trials, Bea is dedicated to zealously advocating for her clients in an array of business matters.  Her broad experience litigating complex commercial matters, including business torts, contractual disputes, non-compete enforcement matters, and misappropriation of trade secrets claims, enables her to counsel clients based on years of firsthand experience in both federal and state court arenas. In addition to her litigation practice, Bea is the firm’s co-managing partner and is committed to upholding the firm’s cultural values and championing local non-profit organizations.

James B. Soble

James B. Soble, a graduate of Grinnell College and Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law, is a commercial real estate attorney with over four decades of experience not only in the Tampa Bay marketplace but regional and national in scope. He represents real estate developers, local, regional, and national financial institutions and private and institutional investors in various acquisition, financing, developments, construction, title insurance, leasing, and sale transactions.  Jim has also been extensively involved in law firm management and administrative roles, active in local community and charitable organizations and has presented numerous lectures, workshops, and roundtable discussions on behalf of the International Council of Shopping Centers.

John W. Waechter

Partner

John W. Waechter is a business transaction attorney who has been practicing with Englander Fischer for over fifteen years and who also serves on the Board of Trustees of the Transamerica Mutual Funds. He was previously the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at William R. Hough & Co., a St. Petersburg based municipal bond firm, for over twenty years. He holds an active Florida certified public accountant license which, together with his real-world business experience, provides him with an added dimension for advising clients in general business matters. John regularly assists clients in organizing new businesses, consulting on a wide variety of business issues, and in the sale or purchase of business entities or business assets. He serves on the board of directors and as Treasurer of Operation PAR and the St. Petersburg Downtown Neighborhood Association. He also serves as chairman of SAS, Inc., a non-profit organization that provides administrative services to other non-profits to enable them to increase efficiency and reduce expenses. He is a life-long resident of St. Petersburg and graduated from the University of Florida and Stetson University College of Law.
